Objective of the Course

The main aim of the course is to prepare young individuals as caring persons to help and assist the elderly. While the students learn to become caring and fine citizens and earn also, the elderly get the required care and companionship much needed by them. Students in this course will learn to interact effectively with aged people, family members and a range of stakeholders involved in an aged, home and community care service. The students will learn the proper way of caring the elders.

They will learn a variety of communication and other employability skills, along with knowledge of dementia, palliative approach, personal, home and community support services.

After successful completion of the course, the students may continue to do Certificate IV in other community services area.

Completion of the Course

The course consists of theory and practical placements in at least one aged care or home and community care service. You must complete practical placements and the assessments to be deemed competent in the units.

Students are placed in nursing homes and aged care facilities for practical placements. Placement duration may be in one week, two weeks or three weeks block. A full 8-hour working day is required. Punctuality is imperative and it is expected for all placements. Students are expected to abide by rules and the following activities can cancel the placements. They are:

  • Unprofessional behavior before or during placement
  • No police check supplied
  • No working with children check supplied
  • Immunization incomplete
  • Other document/s required for the placement not supplied
